Mission Statement

To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth;
To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources;
To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

Structure

 

The Group is composed of approximately 8000 Sierra Club members who live in Nassau or Suffolk County. 

 

It is managed and directed by an eleven member executive committee, the members of which are elected by the group members. The "ExCom" (also called the "Ex Com", the "Exec Com" or similar names) sets policies, establishes and controls the budget, and sets priorities. 

 

The Exec Com meets every month. Members are welcome to attend these business meetings and will be heard if they choose to have input, however, a pre-set agenda has to be completed at each meeting in the three hour time limit so comments from all members, including exec com members, may have to be curtailed. There is a calendar containing the dates and times of these meetings. 

 

The work of the group is performed by members and non-members, often working together as committees. Some committees are well defined while some are fluid and defined by the volunteers working on them.

 

There are structured, existing committees which use many volunteers such as those for fundraising, outings, and water testing,

and there are committees which have fewer volunteers such as membership and energy.

 

The sustained activity of all of these committees and volunteers make the LISC a unique, grassroots, volunteer environmental organization.

 

Financially, the Sierra Club (national) and the Atlantic Chapter provide roughly enough funding to cover the costs associated with our newsletter production and mailing. Income for opertations and programs comes from donations made specifically to the group and from fundraisers created and conducted by group members and friends.
